Ferro Cement
Probably the least liked medium of construction by the boating public and insurance companies, Ferro-Cement has some ardent followers.
Ferro-Cement boats are found all over the world and have completed many circum-navigations. So why do so many people denigrate them? Most negative comment is from ill informed 'experts' that have had no experience with these boats. Unfortunately the bad press has not been helped by many of these boats being poorly constructed in the first place.
Corrosion to the armature can effectively condemn the structure. The cement cover can also prone to cracking if the mix is not done correctly and insufficient cover over the wire ties can lead to rust bleeds or tracking to the main armature.
There are some good examples of Ferro-Cement constructed yachts and they can provide a lot of boat for the purchase price. It is a matter of choosing very carefully.
